Dan Thompson is currently Commercial Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore having arrived in August 2006. Dan’s office is responsible for coordinating Department of Commerce export promotion programs as well as for helping U.S. firms to benefit from the U.S.-Singapore Free Trade Agreement and Singapore’s regional position as a hub for South East Asia. In 2005, U.S. exports to Singapore totaled more than $20 billion making Singapore the 11th largest export market for U.S. goods and services.
Prior to this assignment, Mr. Thompson worked for seven years in Central America, first in Guatemala as the Senior Commercial Officer covering Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and later in El Salvador as the Regional Senior Commercial Officer for Central America. In this position, Dan established a regional office and worked for passage of the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Dan focused his efforts on promoting opportunities in Central America and making CAFTA work for U.S. companies.
Mr. Thompson has also worked overseas for the Department of Commerce in Lisbon, Portugal, Ankara, Turkey, and Kaduna, Nigeria. In the U.S. he has served in assignments at Commerce offices in San Diego, Denver and Washington, DC.
Before joining Commerce, Dan worked for the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zaire.
Mr. Thompson received his BA from the George Washington University and his MA from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.
